"The smartest investors aren't all professional money managers. Every day, adept unsalaried players around the world are matching, or beating, results of the pros. Covestor thinks it's high time for these unsung investment talents to get more recognition, more resources, more of the rewards."

This appears to be a terrific site. However I got to the point of providing my broker username and password and suddenly thought better of it. How can I be sure they are on the up and up? After all they could just clean out my account knowing UN and pwd.

I agree with you. I haven't checked out the site, but if they want your username and password, something doesn't "smell" right.

In fairness to them, they don't require your usename & pw. But they suggest doing it that way because then they can retrieve a record of your trades which is the whole idea of the site. You can also type trades in manually but that is just too cumbersome for me.

Hey Guys

I am one of the founders of Covestor

I appreciate your concern; broker credentials are clearly highly sensitive. We use these only, as it says on the site, to create a view only link to a members broker account. This is the only way to create a verified record of a members actual activity in real time. The connection is supplied by Yodlee, who as you may know use the same technology with over 100 financial institutions in the US. We do not store or have access to these credentials once entered, they are maintained by Yodlee, http://corporate.yodlee.com/technology/security_overview.htm and as I say give view only access to activity data (no personal data such as social security no etc).

As someone rightly posted is not a requirement of Covestor to share your broker credentials. Given the sensitivity of this link we offer an alternative for users to enter trades manually to build a track record. On registration you can choose the manual rather than automatic data import option. Members then upload a copy of their last broker statement, we upload and verify the initial holdings and from there users enter trades manually in a form as they execute them

Happy to discuss further if valuable for anyone (perry@covestor.com)

I beg to differ from others. Unless you're inclined to post your trades in realtime, there's no other way to verify your claims that such trades ever took place―unless you think we're bunch of dumbass to take your words at face value.
