Kevin:
Take a look at some possible inverse ETF trades.
I've started an ETF thread.
I think we're "done" with this bull market.
If you check the charts .... it's been over for 2 weeks.
FAS topped when GS topped. (10-14-09)
It's a done deal, IMHO.
Game over!

GLAD I DIDN'T play MA.

"NEW YORK (Reuters) - MasterCard Inc (NYSE:MA - News) reported higher-than-expected quarterly earnings on Tuesday as the world's second-largest credit card network raised fees to banks and cut expenses, while consumers used their debit cards more.

"I believe the worst is behind us and there are certainly some encouraging signs in the recent economic data," Chief Executive Robert Selander said in a conference call with analysts.

MasterCard's third-quarter net income was $452 million, or $3.45 per share, compared with a loss of $194 million, or $1.48 per share, a year earlier.

Excluding special items, the credit card network posted earnings per share of $3.48, beating analysts' forecast of $2.94, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S."

Sounds great, right?
Then why is MA DOWN $10????

Yeah, I KNOW the cliche', but it doesn't always apply ... look at GNW .. still up after earnings.
"V" (VISA) also still up after earnings.

+++++++++++++++++

Still true for GNW - you got the threat from standard & poors to downgrade early last week, about three or foru days before earnings, which brought the stock below $9. Earnings pushed it back above $11. Right now it is still staying strong at 10.50, and might even break above 11 before week's end.

STEC

Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share from continuing operations was $0.50 for the third quarter of 2009, compared to $0.10 for the third quarter of 2008, and $0.42 for the second quarter of 2009.

Stock has dropped like a stone - down 21% within 10 minutes of this announcement, after running up 7% during the day.

Why? To me, this looks like GOOD news, not bad.

I am considering buying calls tomorrow on this - it just makes no sense that this stock keeps getting beaten down.

Exactly!
The market isn't "rational".
I'm just discovering on the options plays, you're not gonna make any money unless you play 'em 4-5 days PRIOR to the earnings call. I had originally said 2 days, but 2 days is NOT enough.
For example, ALL (Allstate) has their call after the close today.
If you're playing the options, to get the greatest "bang" for your buck, you'd have to buy ALL on the dip, which was 10-28-09 @ $29.50. The $30 calls were 0.85.
Or you could've gotten them 2 days ago for 0.75 if you were lucky enough to "catch" that low.
But even the option prices are IRRATIONAL, so .. WTF!
I'm certainly not gonna pay $1.45 for them today.
Ridiculous!
