Please meet Dr. Starner Jones from Jackson, Mississippi.

His short 2-paragraph letter to the White House accurately puts the blame on a "Culture Crisis" instead of a "Health Care Crisis". Its worth a quick read:

Starner Jones, MD
I am a seventh generation Mississippian and wanted to come back here after going somewhere else for college and medical school. My extracurricular interests are golf, hunting, fishing and college football.

Dear Sirs:

During my last night's shift in the ER, I had the pleasure of evaluating a patient with an expensive shiny gold tooth, multiple elaborate expensive tattoos, a very expensive brand of tennis shoes and a new cellular telephone equipped with her favorite R&B tune for a ringtone. Glancing over the chart, one could not help noticing her payer status: 'Medicaid'. She smokes more than one costly pack of cigarettes every day and somehow, still has money to buy beer.

And our Congress expects me to pay for this woman's health care? Our nation's health care crisis is not a shortage of quality hospitals, doctors or nurses. It is a 'crisis of culture', a culture in which it is perfectly acceptable to spend money on vices while refusing to take care of one's self or, heaven forbid, purchase health insurance.. A culture that thinks "I can do whatever I want to because someone else will always take care of me". Life is really not that hard. Most of us reap what we sow. Don't you agree?

STARNER JONES, MD
Jackson, MS

Dear Dr. Jones:
Is this letter representative of your best "bedside manner"?
I certainly hope not, as it surely lacks the compassion I'd expect from a physician, who is supposedly trained to HELP and heal the sick.
If you don't like working with poor people, then why don't you GET THE HELL OUT OF MISSISSIPPI, and move to Beverly Hills, where I'm sure the patients would be more to your liking.
Or ...
You're more than welcome to move to Maryland where I live. You can work with people who live here illegally, don't speak English, and drain our tax coffers of all gov't funded resources.
By the way, if you don't speak Spanish, YOU will be despised just as much as the pathetic patient you so described above.
HATE works both ways.

I like those two quotes.
However, neither has anything to do with Dr. Jones.
His dilemma is a separate issue.
He's a Doctor.
I'm sure he can find work elsewhere ... Potomac, Barrington, Hinsdale, Northbrook, Sugar Land, Beverly Hills ...
Whatever!!
America's a BIG place.

So, it's OK to be compassionate towards a freeloader sponging off the government, but a doctor is chastised because he does not think that what the woman he was treating is doing the right thing - paying for tennis shoes and cell phone and tattoos, but not paying for health insurance. No mention of him giving her bad treatment or the woman being black. I guess you are all for a socialist government karen?

Ok ... I REVISED it.
Obviously the Dr.feels he's superior to POOR "PEOPLE" and clearly thinks they are undeserving of his medical care.
In fact, his "gold-toothed" character for all I know, may be FICTITIOUS; caricature of a "type" of person HE DESPISES.
Whatever!
He's a HATEFUL snot!
He took a Hypocratic Oath to care for the sick, which does NOT include despising patients based on their socio-economic status.
Nevertheless, I maintain my original position ....
As the saying goes, "If you can't stand the heat, GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN!"
MOVE!
People change jobs all the time ... for WHATEVER reasons.

I think everyone would agree that we should care for people who CAN'T care for themselves. The problem is caring for people who CAN - BUT WON'T care for themselves.

The doctor never said he shouldn't or wouldn't perform his medical duties. He was treating the patient. His point was that we shouldn't be forced (through taxes) to pay for the medical care of those who are able to afford insurance or pay for their own treatment but irresponsibly choose not to and instead indulge themselves.

By the way, nothing in the letter mentioned the doctor’s race either.

@ karennma
... how about "the people who live here illegally, don't speak English,"(nor Spanish , instead speak Swahili, Igbo or Berber) "and drain our tax coffers of all gov't funded resources."

oiki:
You don't have to press "2" for Igbo, Berber, or Swahili.
When I go to the grocery store, the signs are not in Igbo, Berber or Swahili.
When I was looking for a job (i.e., "bi-lingual customer service agents") ... they don't mean Igbo, Berber or Swahili.
In fact, a lot of AMERICANS are out of a job because they don't speaka ..... take ONE guess.
I know guys who worked in construction for years, and can't get jobs because they don't speaka ... take ONE guess.
I know school teachers in Texas who can't get teaching jobs because they don't speaka ... take ONE guess.
I know nurses who can't get hospital jobs because they don't speaka ... take ONE guess.
Currently, the mid-atlantic region is in the middle of a big blizzard.
Just today, I told my neighbor I was considering moving to Florida. Do you know what he said to me???
"don't move there unless you speaka" .... take ONE guess.
It wasn't Igbo, Berber or Swahili.
!!!

edit:
BTW ... if you want to know THE TRUTH about what's happened to America I'd suggest you read any of the following by Pat Buchanan:
"The Death of the West"
"State of Emergency"
"Day of Reckoning"

Here in Pittsburgh, corporations, most notably our health care system, decided to try social engineering, ten of millions of dollars were given to a fund called the Promise, free college education, guess what all are shocked that applications for the promise are
not there, there is an abject intolerance for education , not the way I guess, why not stipulate that a high school education must
be achieved to collect welfare! i guarantee you books would not be kryptonite.
