ConocoPhillips Profit Drops After Oil, Natural-Gas Prices Fall
Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Edward Klump

Oct. 28 (Bloomberg) -- ConocoPhillips, the U.S. oil company that announced plans this month for $10 billion in divestitures, said third-quarter profit fell 71 percent after a collapse in crude and natural-gas prices.

Net income dropped to $1.5 billion, or $1 a share, from $5.19 billion, or $3.39, a year earlier, Houston-based ConocoPhillips said today in a statement on Business Wire.

U.S. oil futures, which touched a record $147.27 a barrel in July 2008, averaged $68.24 in the third quarter, down 42 percent from a year earlier. The average gas price plunged 62 percent. ConocoPhillips said Oct. 7 that it would look to sell about $10 billion of assets over two years and cut capital spending 12 percent in 2010 to reduce debt and boost returns.

THEY DID BEAT EPS ESTIMATES THOUGH, AT $1 VERSUS EXPECTATIONS OF $0.94.

there are to many diff. option strategies for the volume data alone to indicate the direction of the stock.
you must know if the trades where a buy or sell at bid or ask,
and then you still need to determine if it was to open or close a position

Ski:
You're right.
Those traders could've SOLD the calls, not bought them.
Selling those calls would've been a SHORT position.

they could own the stock and sell calls against it for protection or to collect the time and volatility premium as it decays with the stock trading flat. it could also be some adjustment to a large multi-leg position as well.

Skiiva:
Got it.
That "90%" certainly did NOT represent long positions.
Thanks for the feedback.
