Think of the average volume of a stock as the mid-point with daily volume fluctuating all around it. If you're familiar with Bollinger Bands, think of average volume as the 20-day moving average that's in the center of a Bollinger Band. Sometimes the closing stock price will be at the bottom of the Bollinger Band, sometimes it will be at the very top. Volume is like that too.

There was a time when I wanted to only buy stocks with volume of 1,000,000 shares, but I found the same thing you did. A stock with an average volume of, say, 1 million shares will have days where it's far below 1 million.

I did a study to determine what volume you would need to specify to mostly get stocks with an average volume of 1 million and found that a stock where daily volume > 600k would usually get you stocks with an average volume(10) of 1 million. Don't rely on my findings, it's been a while.

You can search for stocks with the average volume you want and then just click thru them to get a sense of the highest and lowest volumes you'll be getting to give you an understanding of the variability you are willing to accept.

Kevin, added the phrase "add column average volume(90)" to my Global setting. Out of 20 results, 5 came back with volume under 100000. Some in 20000 and 30000. Both for Daily volume and "average volume(90). Was hoping SF would chime in with a fix. Appreciate all your time on the issue. As a last resort I can always just ignore the small volume, but this has worked in past years and I don't understand why it is not working currently. On another filter, have the Phrase and average volume(90) above 500000 and getting two results today, one with volume 200000. As I say, no huge deal, I'll just ignore the small volume. Many thanks.
