Why define an exit strategy? You exit when you feel you have enough profit...period.

Deejal,

oh Lord, great advice: Trading based on "feelings". You want to exit when you "feel" you have enough profit. How about losses? How about positions that run against you right from the beginning? In that case there are no profits to apply "feelings" to.

Apparently your feelings are different from mine. Whenever I base my trading on "feelings" I surely pile up losses. Trading is a rational adventure based on stock selection (least important), Stops, Profit Targets, Entry and Exit Strategy and money management (most important). Feelings have no role in this. Preserve them for your girlfriend.

Zen of the day for stock traders:

Buy only stocks that go up. If they don't go up, don't buy them.

Cheers,

deejal

Point being is....

Set your own exit strategy. If you are happy with a 3% gain, then exit. If you are happy with a 10% gain, then exit. I have piled on losses over the year myself so I understand from where you are coming. But I do believe that an exit strategy is as unique as one's individual trading style. Once I get a certain percentage, whether it's within two days, like LOCM did this week, or whether it's within a few minutes, like also LOCM did at yesterday's close, once it hit a 20% gain, I just said, "ok, that's enough, time to cook dinner" and exited. Normally, I stick to an 8% rule. But, I only hold between 1 minute and 10 days. Profit is profit... no matter how you look at it. Don't get greedy.

Deejal,

this is all well and fine, but WHAT ABOUT LOSSES?

I see no provisions in your post for what you do when your position runs into a loss and that might happen right from entry. Wouldn't it be nice if we just had to decide "3% gain" or "10% gain" or whatever GAIN ???

Sometimes the market does not hand you that kind of "sweet spot" decision and you have to prepare for taking a loss.

Cheers,

Don't you listen to CNBC? Nobody takes losses. Whenever there's a sell-off, everybody is "taking profits".
