The future work with Excel's lenders would be more important, he said.

Excel has a large amount of debt due this year, and while it still has sufficient liquidity for now, Mavrinac thinks the company will likely renegotiate its terms with the banks.

"Not an overleveraged company, but they have a lot due in the near term and like everyone else I would expect the banks to work with the company," he said. "Maybe (they will) work out a debt repayment schedule that may not be as aggressive given the reduction of cash flow."

Last week, DryShips (DRYS) managed to reach a preliminary agreement with Nordea Bank AB (NRDEF) (NDA.SK) to get some breathing room on its outstanding debt, pushing back debt due this month after announcing it was selling one of its Panamax ships for 43% less than the original price agreed to with buyers.
