What is the SF code for today's current percentage change of an index? For example ^IXIC is up 3.35% today.

ind(^IXIC, day change)

doesn't seem to work.

Or even just how to calculate the current price of an index? (15-20 min delayed of course)

I think the price for an index is updated after the close. Better use the etf.
