AMZN:
Do you ever wonder when AMZN will split?
Is Bezos waiting for $1000/shr?

So, basically, instead of wasting my time trading, I would've been better off holding AMZN after the 2008 debacle and subsequent recovery.

K,

How would you have known "for sure"?
That's why some people will leave some money on the table (keep a few shares) and "ignore" it? If luck happens for them, so be it. Others are longer term thinkers and will "ignore it" and hope it pays off for another generation.

Karen.

Govt has been buying this market for years now. While technically illegal it is hindsight. You'd never know.

Btw, whatcha trading lately?

gmg733,
Well, I was trading NUGT & JNUG and making nice profits. Then they split, and everything went down hill. I decided I'd keep trading them, just to make up my losses. At first, I made up 50% of the loss, very quickly & easily, then I incurred MORE losses.
Realizing I had to switch to something else, I looked at AMZN.

True story:
5 yrs ago, when I was still working (library), a guy used to stop at my desk to chat. A couple of times, he asked me to find some books for him on stocks & trading, which I'd put on hold and he'd pick up later. A few months went by and he told me he was going to buy AMZN because he was a UPS driver and he was delivering thousands of AMZN packages every week. I pulled up a chart and told him (yep, being the dumb ass that I am) "AMZN's not moving. U should look at NFLX or GOOG."

I never saw him again. But I never forgot that conversation. I always wondered how he did.

Lol. In hindsight we are all millionaires. Pull up long term charts of Awk, Shw and mo for example. Lower left to upper right.

If you'd invested 1,000 in Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) on September 18, 1997, today the investment would be worth:
236,512.17
Annual rate of return: 33.31
Total increase: 23,551.22
Total profit: 235,512.17

gmg733,

You may be onto something. Recently I read a book written in 2014 which has the contention that the stock market is being manipulated by the U.S. Treasury Department to keep it in a tight range so there is not a repeat of what happened with the downturn in 2008. The author has the idea the U.S. Treasury Dept. is a buyer of the market when there is downturn, driving it back up. He can point to October 2011 when he contends this manipulation started. It is well known this is already being done by the Fed in Japan where they already have negative interest rates. Government ownership of private industry is never a good idea.

It is well known since Reagan was in office (google the plunge protection team) that the government was an occasional buyer in the market to stop freefalling prices, but author claims the scale of purchases in recent years is in the trillions of dollars with no authority from Congress. He does not trust any government produced market indicators either.

We are in the second longest bull market in history with no significant earnings growth or GDP growth. In a recent newsletter I read this: "Over the last 40 days, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ("DJIA") has moved in a range of just 2.27%. According to Dana Lyons, partner at J. Lyons Fund Management, this is the least volatile period in at least 100 years."

If the author's contention is true, this artificial meddling in the market will not end well!
